Chapter 1 : The Geography of the Americas

Geographers organize the study of the earth and its people around five themes: location, place, human/environment interaction, movement, and region. They also enlist the help of various tools. One of the more important tools is a globe, which shows the earth in its true shape as a sphere. A map, another tool of geography, is a representation of the earth or any part of the universe on a flat surface. Some maps in this book are special-purpose maps; they give information on specific topics, such as physical regions, climate, or human activities.

The eight major physical regions of the United States are the Hawaiian Islands, the Pacific Coast, the Intermountain region, the Rocky Mountains, the Interior Plains, the Canadian Shield, the Appalachian Mountains, and the Coastal Plains. The nation's largest climate regions include the highland, steppe, humid continental, and humid subtropical.
